Outlaws Run 2009. Act 4: Hells Half Acre and out first visit to Hole-in-the-Wall

After Castle Gardens, we continued our trek North (ish) towards Hole-in-the-Wall. Shortly after leaving Castle Gardens, we came upon Hels Half Acre. Roughly 320 acres, Hells Half Acre is defined as a large scarp. When we came upon it in 2009, remnants of the old restaurant and campground were still standing. Of course, we had to stop and check things out. I remember stopping at Hells Half Acre as a kid during a family road trip.

We spent some time checking out the old restaurant (receipts still left inside) and taking in the views. After trying to find a way down, after seeing a road leading down into Hels Half Acre, we continued North to Hole-in-the-Wall country. We took dirt roads while continuing the drive North to Hole-in-the-Wall. That evening we we found a fine camp a bit South from Hole-in-the-Wall. After a great sunset, we settled in for the night around the fire, though we did do some midnight exploring on foot. The next morning we set out and headed for Hole-in-the-Wall. Having read about Butch Cassidy and his “Wild Bunch” since the sixth grade, I was super excited to finally be checking out Hole-in-the-Wall.

Located in Johnston County, within the Big Horn Mountains, Hole-in-the-wall was one of three remote hide outs Butch Cassidy and his “Wild Bunch” used during there exploits. Browns Park and Robbers Roost being the other two. The hike to Hole-in-the-Wall was mellow but beautiful. We spent some time soaking it all in before heading back to the rigs. After Hole-in-the-Wall the group parted ways, Scott, Kurt and Daniel headed to Outlaws Cave, while Martin Sean and I headed towards home.

Wyoming didn’t disappoint!
