Chasing the Cumbres and Toltec, Summer 2021. Act 2: The chase from Whiplash Curve

One of the nice things about chasing the train is that it doesn’t leave the depot till 10am. Leaving you with plenty of time to sleep in and enjoy camp before getting on the road. We ended up at Whiplash Curve to start this years chase from Sublette. Though a bit early it was nice to hang out with good company. There’s a bunch of dirt roads that follow the tracks of the C&TS from Whiplash Curve to Sublette, making for not only some great photo ops with the train going by, but some fun times keeping up with the train to the next photo spot. After we meet the train in Sublette, we headed to Osier to watch the trains come in for lunch. Afterwards, spending some time on the banks of the Rio de Los Pinos. It was perfect weather to spend some time relaxing. Back at camp we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon playing games and enjoying good company. Ended the day with a nice fire.

Summer flowers. Last days for the Wild Iris.

Making our way to Whiplash Curve from Sublette, NM. Always a beautiful drive.

Special train coming into Osier from Chama.

Brian’s LJ70 as #487 comes in to Osier from Chama for lunch. Steam trains and Land Cruiser. Doesn’t get much better.

Fording the Rio de Los Pinos as the C&TS heads to Antonito from Osier.

Always fun to catch the Chama train as it makes a maintenance stop at Sublette.

A most relaxing, fun filled evening around camp.

My pal Mike was enjoying himself:).

End of a great day.
