Cruise Moab 2014. Act 4: Ma Vida and some exploring around Moab (plus Vendor Night)

Between helping out with Cruise Moab, I headed out with my pals Martin, Treeroot and John to do a bit of exploring around Moab. First up, we headed down to Lisbon Valley to check out Steen’s old Ma Vida mine. Steen’s found his Ma Vida while on his last drill bit, and a bit out of luck. A rags to riches to rags story. The Sunset Grill in Moab, the house up on the hill, was his. Was fun checking out the mine that put Moab on the map. Then it was off to enjoy Vendor Night. After we set out checking some more sites around town.

Charles Steen’s Ma Vida. It put Moab on the map.

Discovered in 1952 by Charles Steen. The story has it he was on his last drill bit and almost out of luck when he hit pay dirt. The mine produced high grade Uranium well into the 60’s.

Checking out some of the equipment outside of the mine.

Was a little sketchy climbing into the mine. Martin thought so.

Making our way down the main haul tunnel.

1300 feet in.

Having fun with the lighting.

A small collapse.
