Ghost Town Run 2020. Act 1: Aguilar, The Spanish Peaks & Cordova Pass plus a stroll around La Veta

To start this years “Ghost Town Run”, we met up in the quiet town of Aguilar, CO- South of Walsenburg and just off I-25. The last census put the town at 538 people. Named after state legislator J. Ramon Aguilar, whom owned the land the town was built on, Aguilar was mostly centered around the coal industry that had a bit of a troubled past (Ludlow Massacre). We meet at the Apishapa Heritage Center in town before heading out to Cordova Pass.

Cordova Pass was a beautiful and relaxing drive through the Spanish Peaks. After, we stopped in La Veta for a stroll around town before continuing on to Westcliff and camp.

At the Apishapa Valley Heritage Center. Some cool old buildings can be found in Aguilar, along with a wild and interesting past.

Stopping to air down at the start of Cordova Pass.

Spanish Peaks. I was excited to be checking them out finally!

Passing through Apishapa Arch, one of many highlights during the drive. Fun driving through one of the many Volcanic Dykes that can be found coming off the Spanish Peaks.

Justin posing “The Mighty Red Chili” under the arch.

Lunch stop at the top of Cordova Pass. West Spanish Peak is in the distance.

Cordova Pass- 11,248ft. Originaly built by Jose de Jesus Cordova who had a ranch in Aguilar. He always wanted a road to run from Aguilar to Cuchara Pass, and finally had enough funding to start construction in 1928. The road was completed in 1934.

Some wonderful views as we near Cuchara, CO.

The Honeybadger.

A short stroll around La Veta, CO.
